Maeril · Backstory

Maeril Greenward is a tiefling abjurer from Wyrm’s Crossing, known as the Green Witch of the Crossing.

Greenward is a name she chose, not one she inherited.

She learned the natural world by living close to it: watching weather, gathering herbs, tracking animals, preparing food, and noticing when something had disturbed the balance of a place. Her initiation into druidic magic gave shape to instincts she already trusted. Life was not separate from danger, and protection was not passive. Roots could shelter or bind. Fire could warm or consume. Every threshold depended on what crossed it.

Maeril later turned to wizardry because instinct alone was not enough. Arcane study gave architecture to her green magic. Abjuration taught her how to make a boundary hold: how to ward a doorway, interrupt hostile magic, shelter the people behind her, and prepare an answer before danger arrived.

She carries that history plainly. Her moss-green skin, bark-textured horns, blind right eye, and the old burn-map across that side of her face make her difficult to mistake for anyone else. She does not hide what survived. She simply refuses to let it decide what she is.

Her magic remains arcane in method and green in instinct. She works through living wood, geometric wards, herbs, thread, chalk, weather, and whatever practical materials the road provides. Her crooked staff is grown rather than polished, and a semi-spectral hawk serves as her familiar and second set of eyes.

For Maeril, care is work. It is a hot meal, a repaired ward, a useful warning, or a line drawn where harm must stop. She can be sharp, impatient, and funny when the pressure allows it, but never careless about the people under her protection.

Now she travels because dangerous thresholds rarely remain closed on their own. Strange magic, unnatural forces, and people who treat life as something to own all leave breaches behind them. Maeril cannot guard every crossing.

She can decide where to draw the next line.
