Book 2
Choosing the Road

Choosing the Road is about the road becoming more than escape.
After Candlekeep, Ṛṣi and Maeril keep moving south because the road lets them remain together, away from Baldur’s Gate, Lantern Hall, old duties, and old lives. At first, the choice is almost private: two people protecting the fragile shape of “us.” But the road is not empty, and Book 2 raises the stakes beyond the intimate beginnings of Book 1. What starts as distance becomes danger, responsibility, paid work, public consequence, and mercy forced to move through a wider world.
Through the caravan south, the giants above Nashkel, the Battlescarred Bard, and the old wounds waiting near the Wealdath, their partnership becomes practiced and visible. Maeril grows into a road-wizard whose weather-reading, scouting, wards, druidic fragments, and battlefield control make protection mobile. Ṛṣi learns that mercy is not only taking pain, but reading harm before it arrives, standing against the lie that would excuse it, and carrying care into places that do not welcome it.
By the time the road turns toward Mosstone, they are no longer simply lovers extending a journey. They are becoming the Monk and the Witch: staff and spell, mercy and ward, walking together into places where care will require trespass, judgment, courage, and consequence
